Case Study: Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) achieves near-10 Gbps global genomic data transfers and eliminates hard-drive shipments with Aspera FASP

A Aspera Case Study

Preview of the BGI Case Study

Connecting genomic researchers with fast transfer of Big Genomic Data

Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), a global life‑sciences organization, faced a major challenge: moving ever‑larger next‑generation sequencing (NGS) datasets between internationally dispersed researchers. Traditional transfer methods and physical hard‑drive shipments were slow, unreliable, error‑prone and costly, creating a bottleneck for timely genomic analysis and collaboration.

BGI built the cloud‑based EasyGenomics™ platform and integrated Aspera’s FASP® high‑speed transfer technology and Aspera Connect Server via available SDKs to enable secure, web‑based upload/download workflows with full bandwidth utilization and enterprise‑grade security. The solution delivered dramatic results—sustained near‑10 Gbps transfers over a US–China research link, a live demo transfer of 24 GB from Beijing to California in under 30 seconds, and elimination of the time, cost and risk associated with shipping hard drives.
