Petrofac Increases Capacity by 20% for Gas Plant Expansion

Petrofac, the largest UK-listed service provider to the international oil and gas industry, needed to validate the technical and economic feasibility of a gas-plant revamp to achieve a 20% capacity increase with minimal hardware changes. Petrofac worked with Aspen Technology using Aspen HYSYS for process simulation and integrated Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating (EDR) models to address accuracy limits in conventional heat exchanger modeling.

By integrating Aspen EDR heat-exchanger models into Aspen HYSYS flowsheets, Aspen Technology enabled Petrofac to debottleneck the plant and accurately predict thermal and hydraulic performance, revealing that only two of three critical exchangers required replacement. The solution delivered the 20% capacity uplift, significant CAPEX savings, improved exchanger selection and process understanding, and a payback period of less than one month.
