Increasing Capacity in Sulfur Production Using Sulsim Modeling

Siirtec Nigi, an engineering and contracting company focused on oil and gas treatment and sulfur recovery, was engaged to help a client nearly double sulfur production while finding the optimal level of oxygen enrichment and control strategy for the sulfur recovery unit. To validate the existing design and test O2 enrichment and injection strategies, Siirtec Nigi used Aspen Technology’s Aspen HYSYS with Sulsim modeling.

Using Aspen Technology’s Aspen HYSYS Sulsim, Siirtec Nigi reproduced the original balances, ran sensitivity analyses to define an operating window and simulate upset conditions, and specified only minor equipment upgrades that could be completed during a normal turnaround. The solution increased sulfur production from 50 to 90 ton/day—nearly a 100% gain—without additional downtime, minimizing cost and operational impact.
