Global Oil Producer Leverages Real-World Models to Help Deploy Offshore Control System in Record Time

Genesis Consulting, a leading upstream oil & gas consultancy, was asked by a global oil producer to commission the Process Control System for an FPSO while the unit was still in dry dock to shorten the project’s critical path. To achieve this, Genesis leveraged Aspen Technology’s modeling solution, using the Aspen HYSYS dynamic model to replicate real‑world conditions and interface with the vessel’s control hardware.

Using Aspen Technology’s Aspen HYSYS model linked to the actual PCS, PSD and ESD hardware, Genesis diagnosed and fixed major control-system bugs in dry dock, removed controls integration from the offshore critical path, and enabled onshore training. The result was an early deployment that cut “time to first oil” by roughly two weeks, saved the producer an estimated $3 million, and reduced cost, risk and complexity for offshore commissioning.
