GlaxoSmithKline faced long batch release times and a bloated, manual batch-record process—handling upwards of 10,000 batches a year with over 1,000 manual entries per batch (more than 10 million entries annually) and an average 10-day preparation/review cycle. To address this, GSK engaged Aspen Technology and adopted Aspen® MES solutions, including Aspen Production Execution Manager, to reassess record structure and reduce manual workload.

Aspen Technology implemented an electronic production-execution system that automates record creation and logbook entries, keeps SOPs visible, and focuses reviewers on exceptions. The pilot cut order preparation time by 95% and reduced record review time by more than 50%, improved equipment utilization and throughput, and eliminated large volumes of manual documentation—results GSK is now rolling out more broadly.
