Fluor Achieve Significant Time Savings in SRU Simulation

Fluor, a global engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction and maintenance company, needed to model a sulfur recovery unit (SRU) that included liquid elemental sulfur, vapor allotropes, furnace behavior and multiple recycle loops—tasks that traditionally required several simulation files because of differing property packages. To address this, Fluor used Aspen Technology’s Aspen HYSYS V10 with Sulsim to attempt a single-file simulation of the entire SRU and associated tail gas treating unit.

Using Aspen Technology’s Aspen HYSYS V10 with Sulsim, Fluor consolidated multiple property packages and recycle streams into one convergent simulation, enabled empirical O2 furnace models, improved prediction of sulfur degassing, and produced rapid Excel outputs for analysis. The implementation saved about a week of simulation effort per feedstock case, reduced manual convergence errors, and prompted Fluor to standardize on Aspen HYSYS V10 for its licensed SRU simulations.
