Dairy Producer Glanbia Increases OEE and Throughput with Real-Time Performance Management

Glanbia, a global ingredients and nutrition group headquartered in Kilkenny, Ireland, needed to boost processing throughput and become the lowest-cost, highest-quality dairy producer in Ireland without major new capital investment. Facing anticipated increases in milk supply at its Ballyragget facility (which processes about 1.4 billion liters of milk annually), Glanbia lacked consistent, real-time operational data and relied on anecdotal information and fragmented spreadsheets. To address this, Glanbia engaged Aspen Technology and its Production Management & Execution (PM&E) application to deliver real-time performance management.

Using Aspen Technology’s PM&E (implemented with partner Orbis), Glanbia gained real-time visibility and analytics that enabled operators, engineers and management to make fact-based decisions. The solution drove a 10% increase in OEE within six weeks, increased throughput by 124 tons per week, raised fat yield by 0.4% (63 tons) and protein yield by 1.4% (146 tons), cut energy consumption by 8%, and reduced mass-balance reporting time by 99%—delivering millions of euros in savings and clear opportunities for further yield, quality and energy projects.
