Control Column Performance Using Aspen HYSYS

Tüpraş, Turkey’s largest refining company, faced a failing naphtha splitter column that produced off‑spec light and heavy straight‑run naphtha used downstream, limiting capacity and energy recovery. To diagnose the problem they worked with Aspen Technology using Aspen HYSYS (with integration to Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating) to model the column, trays, heat exchangers and piping hydraulics.

Using Aspen Technology’s Aspen HYSYS column analysis and Aspen EDR, engineers identified low tray efficiencies, remodeled the column, checked HX vibration/erosion and added an impingement plate where needed, and recommended revamping and replacing column trays. The solution delivered a projected 40% increase in column capacity, a 15% reduction in utility consumption (~$500,000 USD/year), improved on‑spec product quality, and a full recovery of project costs in under one year.
