Chevron Employs APC Best Practices to Get Controllers Online Faster After Unit Turnarounds

Chevron, one of the world’s largest integrated energy companies, needed to get advanced process control (APC) controllers back online quickly after unit turnarounds, where maintenance and modifications often require significant controller rework. To address this, Chevron partnered with Aspen Technology and used aspenONE APC applications (including Aspen DMCplus) to improve controller sustainability and reduce the effort of revamps.

Aspen Technology implemented aspenONE APC sustainability features—automated step testing, real‑time detection, diagnostics, and adaptive modeling—to accelerate model rebuilds, ensure constraint‑safe testing, and reduce operator and engineering burden. The solution helped Chevron return controllers to service faster, saved thousands of dollars for each day a controller would otherwise be offline, and supports estimated refinery benefits of $23–$55M per year (about $2.5–$6.0M per major unit), with Aspen DMCplus uptime reported at 100%.
