Borealis Achieves Faster Run Times and Better Quality Planning Solutions with Aspen PIMS-AO

Borealis, a global leader in polyolefins, base chemicals and fertilizers, was struggling with time-consuming weekly planning runs across hundreds of cases, convergence and local-optima problems, limited ability to model non-linear plant constraints with traditional LP techniques, and fragmented desktop installations that left backup planners without access to current models. To address these issues Borealis evaluated and selected Aspen Technology’s Aspen PIMS-AO.

Aspen Technology implemented Aspen PIMS-AO with a centralized VM deployment, migrating and fine-tuning existing models, conducting joint workshops, and publishing the models on a server environment. The result: dramatically faster run times that free up time to analyze and explore many more scenarios, all cases now converge with virtually no local optima, non-linear constraints are modeled accurately, and centralized deployment improved planner collaboration while easing software maintenance and making more efficient use of hardware.
