How clinician-led, interoperable technology is making ‘invisible’ patients visible

Chase Farm Hospital, part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, faced the challenge of managing patient care in a new, digitally advanced facility featuring 42 single rooms, where patients would be less visible to nursing staff. The Trust needed a modern patient response system to replace outdated nurse call technology, improve operational efficiency, and integrate with other new equipment. They partnered with vendor Ascom to implement their Telligence patient response system integrated with Myco smartphones.

The Ascom solution provided a fully interoperable digital system that made patients "visible" by sending alerts and vital sign data directly to staff smartphones. This resulted in significant efficiencies, including saving nurses up to 30 minutes daily on audits, reducing bed turnaround time by 40 minutes, and saving 15 minutes per patient in theatre recovery. The system improved communication, reduced alarm fatigue, and allowed the hospital to handle increased patient flow without additional nursing staff.
