Western Sydney University, which pays up to 6,000 people fortnightly, faced a paper‑based, manually intensive payroll and HR environment that produced heavy double handling, frequent errors and time‑consuming ad hoc reporting. Although WSU had used an Ascender payroll product for more than a decade, the university had not adopted newer integrated features and was still processing more than 10,000 casual contracts a year with at least an hour of manual entry per contract.
Ascender specialists analysed WSU’s workflows and customised its payroll/HCM solution to deliver online, integrated services — including mileage reporting, onboarding and bank‑account changes — that removed paper, automated integrations with existing HR systems and allowed managers to approve claims off‑site. The Ascender implementation drastically reduced admin for around 60 HR staff, eliminated much of the manual entry for thousands of casual contracts, sped onboarding and improved transparency, staff morale, performance and overall efficiency.
