Penn Medicine, a leading academic medical center, needed to modernize accounts payable after an antiquated, outsourced imaging process created high costs, errors, poor auditability and no workflow or real‑time ERP integration. To reduce errors, increase productivity, improve exception processing and move toward a paperless, auditable environment, Penn Medicine selected Ascend Software and its SmartTouch AP solution (scanning, analytical OCR capture, RS Advanced Workflow, RS Image Manager and Ascend’s ECM).

Ascend Software implemented SmartTouch AP, bringing scanning and indexing in‑house, adding OCR, workflow and real‑time Lawson integration to automate routing, tracking and exception handling. The deployment reduced monthly costs, cut error and resolution rates, enabled invoice capture two days faster for quicker discrepancy resolution, improved reporting and staff productivity, and has positioned Ascend’s solution for broader use across the organization.
