Glendale Water and Power - Customer Case Study

Glendale Water and Power (GWP), a municipal electric utility, faced the challenge of replacing an aging natural gas power plant under pressure from environmental groups and city council. The utility needed to find local, low-carbon energy solutions due to limited transmission access and sought help from Ascend Analytics to evaluate proposals through a comprehensive Clean Energy RFP process using their PowerSIMM™ planning software.

Ascend Analytics evaluated numerous proposals and recommended a balanced portfolio of distributed solar, energy efficiency, demand response, a large-scale battery system, and a small fleet of internal combustion engines for backup reliability. The solution, which was unanimously approved by the city council, saved customers over $130 million compared to the original gas plant plan and set GWP on a path to meet future zero emissions goals cost-effectively.
