A Asana Case Study
The Astraea Foundation is a public philanthropic organization that funds and builds power for LGBTQI people and women-led movements worldwide, prioritizing lesbians, queer women, trans and gender‑nonconforming people, intersex people, and people of color. Faced with the dual challenge of shifting resources to the most marginalized activists and coordinating complex, cross‑departmental programs from a small New York‑based team, Astraea needed systems that let them move quickly on funding, advocacy, and capacity‑building work.
Astraea adopted Asana across development, program, fiscal, and communications teams to centralize project planning, collect multi‑team feedback, and use repeatable templates for events and reports. The tool reduced email clutter, gave a clear bird’s‑eye view of projects, and helped the foundation focus on advocacy and training; operational improvements supported major impact — between 2011 and 2016 they more than doubled grantmaking capacity and in 2016 distributed over $3.5M to 190 activist groups in 62 countries, with the majority of funding directed to lesbian, queer, and trans‑led initiatives.
