Articulate Storyline Healthcare Training Takes Aim at Maternal Mortality Rates

Nebraska Community Blood Bank education director Janelle Francis and Dr. Jed Gorlin tackled a critical healthcare gap: obstetric hemorrhage is the leading global cause of maternal death, and delays or unclear transfusion policies can cost lives. They needed a scalable way to train nurses, physicians, lab staff, and teams to recognize triggers and implement massive transfusion protocols quickly and consistently.

They created two training formats—a straightforward PowerPoint and an interactive, self-directed e-learning module built with Articulate Storyline—using real-life scenarios, videos, illustrated characters, templates, and interactive elements to promote simulation and learner engagement. The program has been shared with more than 70 America’s Blood Centers member organizations (on 190 flash drives), is informing ACOG and CMQCC guidance, and has enabled broader staff-led course development, helping educate clinicians and reduce maternal mortality risk.
