Paychex, a leading provider of human capital management, payroll, benefits, and insurance services, was looking for ways to control rising benefits costs. Working with Artemis Health and its benefits analytics platform, the company identified a growing problem with avoidable emergency room spending and wanted to understand where members were using the ER for conditions that could be handled at a more appropriate point of care.

Using Artemis Health’s data model, Paychex analyzed avoidable ER claims by condition and office location, uncovering $1.5 million in avoidable ER overspending in the first half of 2019, up 15% from the prior period. Artemis Health helped Paychex pinpoint higher-cost locations and inform targeted actions such as telemedicine promotion, member education, and on-site benefits outreach to reduce unnecessary ER use and lower costs for both the plan and employees.
