Peabody Energy Avoids Unnecessary, Costly Equipment Replacement

Peabody Energy, the world’s largest private-sector coal company, needed a better way to decide when to repair, rebuild, or replace its 104 Caterpillar D11 dozers used in surface coal mining. To support these high-value asset decisions, Peabody worked with ARMS Reliability on a maintenance strategy optimization and lifecycle cost study.

ARMS Reliability collected and validated site data, modeled multiple maintenance and replacement scenarios, and worked with Peabody’s internal experts to identify the optimal strategy. The analysis showed there was no advantage to replacing a dozer unless it improved productivity or addressed environmental/regulatory needs, and it also revealed maintenance process improvements. The study helped Peabody build a stronger long-term capitalization plan, increase internal capability, and may save about 10 times the cost of the study each year.
