Fonterra Achieves Bottom-Line Results by Institutionalizing Root Cause Analysis

Fonterra, the world’s largest exporter of dairy products, struggled to improve equipment availability and reliability across its 26 New Zealand processing sites. Although the company had a corrective action process in place, root cause analysis was inconsistent, underused, and often seen as a “flavor of the day,” with different sites using different methods and limited visibility for management.

Fonterra partnered with ARMS Reliability and adopted Apollo Root Cause Analysis training and consulting to standardize and institutionalize RCA across the organization. The result was over 500 RCAs conducted annually, reduced maintenance expenditures and catastrophic failures, increased processing capacity and improved product specifications, stronger collaboration between maintenance and operations, and RCA becoming part of business as usual and Fonterra’s broader Operational Excellence Program.
