Case Study: Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute achieves a high-performance, scalable OpenStack cloud and faster genomic analytics with Arista Networks

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute selects Arista for innovative cloud-based infrastructure as a service platform to aid scientific breakthroughs

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, a world-leading genomics research centre, needed an open, flexible networking foundation to underpin a new OpenStack-based cloud and forthcoming S3-compatible storage. Faced with tens of terabytes of new data daily, growing compute and storage requirements, and the need to dynamically allocate resources for large-scale sequencing and analysis, the Institute required low-latency, highly scalable switching and mature SDN integration to support global research workflows.

Working with Arista, the Institute deployed Arista 7060X switches, Arista EOS and CloudVision alongside OpenStack/Neutron in a 25GbE leaf / 100GbE spine design to provide high throughput, low latency and large shared buffers. The new platform delivered scalable 100GbE performance, centralized automation and zero-touch provisioning that reduced management overheads and improved job queuing and resource allocation—enabling analyses that previously took months to complete in days.
