Case Study: University of Winchester achieves faster, more resilient and lower-cost campus networking with Arista Networks

A Arista Networks Case Study

The University of Winchester turns to Arista for fast, flexible and cost effective campus networking

The University of Winchester needed to upgrade its ageing campus network to handle rapidly growing traffic driven by a BYOD policy, a 500% rise in wireless hotspots, upcoming 802.11ac access points and bandwidth-heavy services like lecture capture and streaming. Its existing 1 Gbps infrastructure risked bottlenecks as demand was expected to grow fivefold over five years, while the university also required greater flexibility, resilience and lower operational costs.

The university deployed three Arista 7050T and eight 7050S 10GbE switches running Arista EOS, consolidating core and distribution layers, adopting MLAG/virtual ARP and reducing the number of switches. The re-architecture delivered a ten-fold speed increase between core, distribution and edge (threefold in the data centre), simplified management, better resiliency, lower total cost of ownership and an open OS that enables custom tooling and automation.
