Case Study: mixi, Inc. achieves stable service operation and faster response times with Arista Networks switches

A Arista Networks Case Study

Preview of the Mixi Case Study

Adopting the Arista switches for mixi service infrastructure Achieving stable service operation and improved response time

mixi, Inc., operator of Japan’s leading social network with about 24 million users, faced intermittent service degradation when cache servers generated burst traffic at peak times. Their existing edge switches showed throughput drops despite spare capacity, so mixi set out to replace aging edge equipment with a higher-performance, reliable solution that would scale with future growth and keep initial and maintenance costs down.

After a month of testing, mixi deployed Arista switches (including 7048T and 7100 series) for their high-capacity buffers, processing performance and competitive cost. Rolled out in phases across roughly 500 servers and upgraded uplinks to 10GbE, the new switches eliminated packet drops, improved response times and overall service stability, have run without equipment failures since the 2011 operation start, and are slated for wider use and advanced features like MLAG.
