The Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) works to reduce torture and ill-treatment worldwide, and needed a way to train police officers in Madagascar on new custody register procedures. With in-person sessions disrupted by COVID-19 and limited internet access across the country, APT turned to Arist and its message-based learning approach to reach officers who mainly had smartphones.
Working with Arist, APT delivered a French-language training course via WhatsApp, using short daily lessons, scenario-based guidance, and custom cartoon illustrations. The program helped officers understand how to complete custody registers and apply the new safeguards, with strong feedback on comprehension and impact. Arist’s solution also appeared to support broader benefits, including reduced opportunities for corruption and injustice, helping APT move forward with a countrywide rollout.
