St. Jude Medical delivers cardiac ablation in 10 minutes with Areteworks

St. Jude Medical faced the challenge of designing the user experience for their Epicor Cardiac Ablation System, a high-intensity focused ultrasound device used for a high-stakes surgical procedure. The system had to be used within the complex environment of a cardiac surgical suite without interrupting the surgical flow, all while coordinating between multiple users including a gloved surgeon and a console operator. Vendor Areteworks was brought in to design the UX across the full system.

Areteworks designed an intuitive user experience by first observing real surgical procedures and mapping the entire workflow. Their solution translated the surgical process into a coherent interface that supported the team's verbal communication patterns, providing clear visual hierarchy and progress feedback. As a result of this work, the Epicor system received FDA clearance and CE Mark for surgical ablation of cardiac tissue.
