University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust ensures continuity of patient care

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust, which brings together five hospitals and 12,500 staff, needed to ensure continuity of patient care as electronic patient records and high‑resolution imaging made IT systems essential. Their tape-based backups were slow (restores could take up to two days and backups stretched to 24 hours), risking delays to treatment and prompting a search for improved data protection and disaster recovery.

The trust deployed six Arcserve appliances to protect and replicate more than 200 TB of critical data across two data centres, replacing much of its tape-first approach. As a result, system recovery is now about 32 times faster (roughly 30 minutes vs up to two days), backup windows are reduced by two‑thirds, migrations cause far less downtime, and built-in deduplication, encryption and offsite retention help safeguard patient services.
