Newcastle College Group (NCG) is one of the UK’s largest education and training organisations, serving about 133,000 learners through six divisions and operating 50 sites with 350 physical and virtual servers. Faced with 172 TB of critical data, NCG’s legacy backup tool was expensive, resource-heavy, lacked incremental backup and per-division reporting, and produced long backup windows — prompting a cost-driven search for a better data protection solution.

NCG deployed Arcserve UDP in under a month, using deduplication, compression and incremental backups plus replication to a DR site. The solution shrank data from 172 TB to 30 TB, cut backup windows by 80%, reduced backup staff by 50% and freed significant storage (about 25 TB on new hardware), while providing per-division reporting and real-time alerts — safeguarding operations, lowering IT costs and improving staff productivity.
