Furness College Reducing backup costs by 50% while safeguarding student projects

Furness College, a UK further-education provider serving more than 4,000 students with around 350 staff, needed to protect student and staff work from ransomware, hardware failure and accidental deletion after its backup hardware reached end of life. The existing cloud-based backup was slow to restore, had a stretched backup window and made finding individual files time-consuming—putting student grades and the college’s reputation at risk.

In May 2021 the college deployed two Arcserve 9000-series appliances secured by Sophos, cutting backup costs by 50% and protecting 32 servers with nearly 600 TB of recoverable data. The appliances deliver automated verification and Assured Recovery, enable individual-file restores and full server recovery in minutes (files are recovered four times faster), reduced Exchange backup from eight hours to 7.5 minutes, compressed storage to under 30 TB, and helped the college meet Cyber Essentials and recovery time objectives.
