DFZS Protects patient data and clinical services with Arcserve appliances

De Forensische Zorg Specialisten (DFZS) is a Dutch forensic mental healthcare provider with about 1,200 employees that must ensure round-the-clock access to patient data. Its legacy tape-based backup was costly to manage offsite, nearing end-of-life, and had grown so slow that the IT team had to exclude non-essential servers — the nightly backup window reached 19 hours and restores were time-consuming.

DFZS deployed two Arcserve 9096DR appliances (head office and datacentre) to back up on‑prem systems and Microsoft 365, run Assured Recovery tests, and replicate data between sites while retaining in‑house tape for offline copies. The change reduced the backup window to eight hours, cut 400+ TB of recoverable data down to 26 TB (≈93.5% reduction) through deduplication/compression, enabled minute‑scale restores and bare‑metal recovery, and improved compliance and overall data resilience.
