Cork City Council Increases efficiency and agility with optimised backups

Cork City Council, the local authority serving about 150,000 residents with 400 staff, was struggling with rapidly growing data from widespread virtualization and an almost full SAN. Its tape-based backups and monthly VM clones couldn’t protect all systems or meet recovery-time needs, so the council needed to reduce backup storage use and improve recovery without buying new hardware.

The council implemented Arcserve UDP to protect ~10TB across 56 virtual and 5 physical servers, using deduplication and incremental-to-disk backups so 1.1TB of daily changes requires only 142GB of storage. This freed 3.5TB of capacity, sped recoveries, simplified management and freed IT time—allowing new VMs and a CRM rollout that improved staff productivity and public service delivery.
