TruTech, a Campbell, CA–based managed service provider serving small and midsize businesses, was called in when a client’s employee opened a malicious email attachment that unleashed CryptoLocker. The ransomware spread to the company’s 160 GB office server, rendering business-critical files inaccessible and causing multi-day downtime.

Because the server had been backed up to Arcserve UDP Cloud Direct BaaS, TruTech worked with Arcserve to restore the client’s data from a seven-day retention copy that did not contain the ransomware. All required files were recovered in about eight hours, minimizing disruption, demonstrating the value of managed services, and underscoring the importance of offsite cloud backups for ransomware protection.
