San Diego Gas & Electric Normalizes Multi-Year Capital Project Management with ARCHIBUS

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), a utility with more than 2 million square feet of facilities across a 4,100‑square‑mile service territory, struggled with an inefficient, spreadsheet‑based and fragmented capital project process. Multiple disconnected systems (a legacy PM tool, Microsoft Project, Maximo and SAP) made approvals, budgeting and data-sharing cumbersome and prevented normalized, multi‑year planning.

SDG&E executed a 9‑month, three‑phase program to make ARCHIBUS the centralized platform—performing gap analysis, process reengineering, data mapping and workflow design—while integrating ARCHIBUS with Maximo and SAP and phasing out legacy tools. The implementation delivered automated bi‑directional data flows, better cost tracking and document control, enabled multi‑year budgeting and planning, and helped grow managed annual project budgets from $5–7M to over $40M, with $10–15M in projects maintained year to year.
