Duke University Medical Center: Integrated Healthcare, Integrated Databases

Duke University Medical Center (DUHS), a leading academic medical center with hundreds of buildings and roughly 12 million square feet, faced fragmented space data spread across homegrown systems, flat files, CAD-linked ARCHIBUS tables and many departmental "shadow" systems. The Administrative Development Group (ADG) needed a single, reliable institutional space database to support space planning, accounting, and reporting.

ADG developed the STAR web application to interface with ARCHIBUS and add Duke-specific tables, then expanded ARCHIBUS licensing so all groups could work in one integrated system. The unified database delivered consistent, trusted numbers across the institution, improving indirect cost recovery, cost allocation, Medicare/Medicaid reporting, budgeting and facilities operations — and enabled new analytics like dollars-per-square-foot comparisons.
