NPS shares IBM i Applications Mining with the ARCAD-Observer Suite

New Process Steel (NPS), a long-established specialty metals supplier with multiple U.S. plants, faced the challenge of extending mission‑critical RPG-based IBM i applications to web‑enabled architectures while accurately uncovering complex data relationships and business logic. After reviewing available tools, NPS selected ARCAD Software’s ARCAD‑Observer Suite to provide fully automated discovery and documentation of its legacy applications and to share analysis results across the IT organization.

ARCAD Software implemented the ARCAD‑Observer Suite (source code analysis, diagrams, open documentation and a Windows desktop client) to drill down into RPG code, filter and navigate results, publish dynamic HTML reports and add annotations for different developer roles. The solution eliminated much of the time‑consuming manual code mining, enabled non‑RPG developers to access and reuse legacy knowledge without depending on RPG specialists, and immediately accelerated project development and the company’s legacy‑to‑web extension efforts.
