Kolcraft Enterprises, a long-established maker of baby products and the U.S. leader in crib mattresses, faced a growing product-complexity challenge: thousands of base designs and customer-specific variants across engineering, fashion and marketing required manual, error-prone BOM and change management. Its in-house Product Specification System could not scale to manage configurations, revisions and cross-discipline requirements, slowing development and risking inconsistent product updates.

Kolcraft implemented Aras Enterprise Open Source PLM using a prototype-and-iterate approach, deploying a rules-based configuration model that maintains independent revision levels by discipline and automates BOM updates and variant creation. The result: consistent design integrity, faster time-to-market, improved product quality and reduced development costs, full migration off the legacy system, and better program insight with plans to expand PLM to project and CAD management.
