InfoCamere Investigation on Graph Databases Exploring Relationships among Italian Companies with ArangoDB

InfoCamere, the IT company of the Italian Chambers of Commerce, set out to investigate graph databases to better explore equity participations and relationships among Italian companies from the Italian Business Register. Faced with complex traversal and path queries that are hard to implement efficiently in SQL, InfoCamere evaluated several graph systems — including ArangoDB (tested as ArangoDB v3.0.10) — to compare conceptual fit, query expressivity and performance for use in its applications.

InfoCamere imported its equity-participation dataset into ArangoDB and other systems and ran a suite of traversal and analytic queries. ArangoDB delivered strong import and query performance, especially for light and intermediate workloads, while graph databases overall outperformed the relational PostgreSQL by one to two orders of magnitude on heavy graph-exploration queries. InfoCamere noted ArangoDB’s good documentation and ease of use (with a RAM-use caveat in v3.0.10 that ArangoDB addressed in v3.2/RocksDB) and decided to adopt ArangoDB for a demo application.
