How Refinitiv Built a ‘Single View of Everything’ BA/BI Platform

Refinitiv, a provider of intelligence and technology for financial, risk, legal and media professionals, set out to build a “single view of everything” BA/BI platform to unify more than twenty disparate data sources and serve many departments and roles. The challenge was to ingest growing amounts of semi-structured data, support ad hoc joins and graph traversals, and offer fast, schemaless access — requirements that led Refinitiv to choose ArangoDB (using AQL and its Foxx microservices framework).

Using ArangoDB, Refinitiv implemented a multi-model database layer with AQL queries and over twenty Foxx services, storing about 40GB today and handling a baseline of 3 writes/sec and spikes of ~2,000 updates/sec. ArangoDB enabled fast, complex queries (even 200+ line queries by business analysts), reduced development time through mocked REST services in Foxx, consolidated reporting and APIs in one place, and improved security and extensibility — delivering noticeably quicker answers and smoother application development.
