The Co-operative Cuts Food Miles and CO2 with Paragon Dynamic Route Planning

The Co-Operative, which delivers to nearly 4,000 stores across the UK using 1,300 trucks and 9,500 routes, faced rising complexity as store growth and new larger distribution centres caused volume fluctuations that strained fixed-route schedules. To maximise efficiency and maintain delivery windows, The Co-Operative adopted Aptean Routing & Scheduling Paragon Edition’s dynamic route planning solution with resource management.

Using Aptean Routing & Scheduling Paragon Edition (Paragon) and its route execution/resource management functionality, planners update driver availability nightly, load actual order volumes and delivery windows, and generate optimized, compliant schedules that also feed the warehouse management system. The Paragon implementation delivered a 5% reduction in delivery miles at a pilot DC, is expected to cut CO2 by about 5,000 tonnes per year across the network, and has improved delivery reliability while enabling better handling of volume fluctuations and supporting expansion.
