Paragon Transportation Optimization Helps Grocery Retailer Cut Costs

Sainsbury’s, a large UK-based food retailer operating 19 distribution centres and serving 527 supermarkets plus 276 smaller stores, needed to tighten control over complex multi-shift national deliveries to cut costs, reduce empty running and avoid missed delivery windows. To meet this challenge it deployed Aptean Routing & Scheduling Paragon Edition as part of its Integrated Transportation Management System (ITMS), integrating Paragon’s routing and scheduling optimizer and Route Execution with Isotrak telematics.

Using Aptean Routing & Scheduling Paragon Edition’s resource-managed planning and live Route Execution (which can automatically re-spin schedules to avoid time-window breaches) and Isotrak vehicle data, Sainsbury’s improved execution and efficiency across its network. The implementation increased driver productivity by 8%, reduced empty running by 12% (about 2,000 fewer empty journeys per week), cut store turnaround times by 15%, raised on-time deliveries by 17%, saved roughly 142,245 gallons (~500,000+ litres) of fuel across four sites and cut about 1.4 million kg CO2, while reducing annual distance travelled by 3.8%.
