Aptara has partnered with IEEE since the 1990s to tackle large-scale digitization and conversion projects. Challenges have included converting Word and TeX files to XML at about 50,000 pages per year, digitizing 280,000 microfilm and hard-copy documents, and executing a 2011 backlist conversion of journals, conferences, magazines, and standards from PDF, XML, and SGML into deliverable formats—totaling roughly 11 million pages in 2.5 years.

Aptara implemented an automated, scalable workflow using its proprietary iZone tool and conversion scripts to extract and clean content, convert complex math into coded language, and produce refined XML/HTML for IEEE Xplore. Concurrent specialized QC tools and streamlined processes ensured high accuracy and on-time delivery of large volumes of subscriber-ready content.
