In 2013 Future Science Group (FSG), a consortium of independent scientific, technical and medical publishers, engaged Aptara to reduce costs and speed journal production. FSG’s existing process relied on in-house page composition in Adobe InDesign and copyediting in Microsoft Word, creating manual bottlenecks and version-control challenges.

Aptara implemented a staged transition to its PXE publishing platform and PowerEdit conversion tools, converting Word/LaTeX manuscripts to XML, automating pre-editing and reference validation, and enabling author corrections within a single linear workflow. Centralized content management and automated output to PDF and XML cut costs and time to market, improved data integrity and version control, and enabled FSG to produce tablet-ready eTitles—about 200 new titles per year.
