A Aptara Case Study
Aptara provided onshore journal production for the American Physical Society (APS), a relationship that began in 2005 and expanded in 2010 when Aptara took on additional journals, increasing output from about 30,000 to over 80,000 pages per year. The challenge was to scale operations quickly to meet tighter turnaround times and to migrate APS’s publisher XML from its own DTD to the NLM/JATS standard while ensuring accurate tagging of complex elements and funding metadata.
To meet the demand Aptara expanded its onshore copyeditorial staff from 12 to 35 (and proportionally increased production staff), rebuilt quality-assurance checklists in its PowerQA tool, and worked with APS on tagging issues for abstracts, tables, equations and references. Within six months Aptara met expected TATs and continues to meet them for more than 99% of manuscripts; APS became NLM/JATS-compliant by early 2014, and Aptara’s CrossRef FundRef checks improved the accuracy and delivery of funding acknowledgments.
