Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute - Customer Case Study

Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea’s largest government-funded telecom research center, needed a way to isolate corporate data on mobile devices as part of its ViMo (Virtualization for Mobile) project — a micro VMM/OS‑switching approach to run multiple OS images on a single Cortex A8 (S5PC100, ARMv7) device. ETRI required a user-friendly switch interface, sub‑one‑second switching, and exact task resumption, but lacked available in‑house resources, so it engaged Apriorit to research and develop the solution.

Apriorit performed feasibility research, reverse engineering and kernel/ARM/Android development, then built and refined prototypes to implement fast OS switching between two Android instances (the ViMo micro‑VMM approach). Apriorit delivered a working solution in about six person‑months, expanding ViMo functionality, increasing the target market roughly fivefold, enabling ETRI to be first to market and attracting interest from major manufacturers (e.g., Samsung, LG).
