Case Study: Devolutions achieves browser-based remote access with Apriorit’s Rust VNC port

A Apriorit Case Study

Devolutions boosts VNC performance 4.5x with Apriorit

Devolutions, a Canadian cybersecurity company, faced the challenge of modernizing its legacy IronVNC protocol, which was written in C and had a minimal feature set. They engaged Apriorit to port the protocol to Rust to improve security and reliability, add support for multiple VNC extensions, and crucially, enable WebAssembly (WASM) compatibility for browser-based remote access.

Apriorit successfully ported the VNC protocol and a complex MVS codec from C to Rust, implementing a sans-I/O architecture for platform independence. After optimizing the codec, they achieved a 4.5x performance improvement. The resulting solution allowed Devolutions to integrate a fast, secure, and feature-rich protocol into their new web-based Devolutions Gateway product.
