IE Business School, a renowned institution, sought to research the economic impact of Apple and Google's royalty rate reductions for small app developers. Professors Annamaria Conti and Juan Santaló aimed to test two competing hypotheses on whether the policy would increase developer effort or attract lower-quality apps, requiring comprehensive app store data for their analysis. They partnered with vendor AppTweak and utilized its API to gather this data.

AppTweak provided a robust API that delivered extensive data on app downloads, top charts, and ASO activities for a large sample of games. This solution enabled the research, which found that while the policy did lead to more apps, it also increased market competition, making ASO more critical. The data revealed that apps implementing ASO strategies saw a significant increase in downloads: 9% on iOS and 12% on Google Play after the policy change, demonstrating the measurable impact of AppTweak's data on their findings.
