How Rotary International Is Using Apps To Help Rebuild The Hurricane-Ravaged Caribbean

Rotary International’s District 7020 — part of a global network of 1.2 million members — faced a massive coordination challenge after hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria struck the Caribbean in fall 2017. Clubs on many islands needed to document needs, request aid, manage volunteers and distribute supplies across areas with damaged infrastructure, spotty cell service and intermittent power.

Rotarian Michael Terrelonge built a mobile, offline-capable app on the AppSheet platform so teams could capture data on the ground and sync when connected; the initial app was live in two days and a scaled club version deployed in under an hour. The apps became a central hub with maps and automated processes that streamlined requests, donor management and supply distribution, reduced information silos, improved response speed and resiliency, and helped get essentials — including potable water filtration systems — to affected communities.
