How Mobile Apps are Helping Protect Florida's Waterways

Port Everglades Pilots Association represents Florida’s harbor pilots who guide nearly 4,000 ship movements a year through waterways that underpin a $28 billion‑per‑year regional economy. For decades the pilots relied on a paper logbook and shore‑kept notebooks, which prevented real‑time recording, forced tedious after‑shift hand entry, and produced inconsistent, inaccessible vessel data—risks that could compromise safety and port operations.

Carl Mahler built a mobile solution using Google Sheets and AppSheet so pilots can submit standardized vessel reports in real time from their phones, including required fields and photos and the ability to add new ships to the database. The app automated workflows, made data instantly accessible anywhere, and let pilots know a ship’s capabilities before boarding—improving efficiency, consistency and safety while helping protect the port and surrounding ecosystem.
