How Kentucky Power Sparked a Digital Transformation with Workflow, Inspection and Incident Management Apps

Kentucky Power, an AEP operating company, set out to modernize its field operations after its Lean Team found paper-based workflows and legacy spreadsheets were slowing crews and introducing errors. Early digitization with Smartsheet solved some problems but lacked barcode scanning, editable forms and tight field integration, so the company needed a secure, easy-to-use no-code solution that could collect data in the field and interface with existing systems.

Using AppSheet, citizen developer Paula Bell built about 10 custom apps (including a barcode-enabled Transformer Tracker, Pole Tracker, Circuit Inspection Tracker and an Incident Reporter) that feed directly into Smartsheet. The apps cut data-entry errors, reduced paper handling, improved inventory accuracy and repair turnaround, enhanced safety and mapping of open work orders, and were rapidly adopted by crews with minimal training.
