When a devastating earthquake hit Nepal, Habitat for Humanity’s disaster response team, led by Chris Needham, was tasked with distributing emergency shelter kits to affected families. Challenged by difficult terrain, limited resources, and the need to make every dollar count, the team needed a fast, reliable way to collect on-the-ground data to target materials and measure how well communities were being served.

Needham built a DIY mobile survey app on AppSheet to collect family-level data from tablets in the field, giving distribution teams real-time information to tweak kit designs and delivery. After about 1,500 kits the app enabled rapid adjustments that improved the next 3,000–3,500 kits, protected donor investments, increased impact substantially, and will be used in constructing the next 100,000 homes in Nepal.
