Case Study: WellSpan Health achieves faster EMR access and doubles concurrent users with AppSense Performance Manager

WellSpan Health optimizes electronic medical record performance and reliability with AppSense

WellSpan Health, an integrated system serving more than 650,000 people across south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, struggled when clinicians migrated from Cerner Classic to the more resource-intensive Cerner Millennium PowerChart. Millennium’s heavy CPU and memory demands caused logon times of 30–90 seconds—about 20 seconds slower than Classic—hampering clinician adoption and creating significant productivity loss despite infrastructure upgrades.

After deploying AppSense Performance Manager, WellSpan reduced Millennium access times to 10–12 seconds, doubled concurrent users per Citrix server (now 60–80), and saved up to 300 MB of memory per instance. The improvement increased infrastructure resiliency and fail-over capacity, enabled an anticipated 20% reduction in server count, cut client re-imaging frequency, and maintained performance even under extreme load.
