Sydney Adventist Hospital cures virtual desktop infrastructure with AppSense

Sydney Adventist Hospital (the San), a 550‑bed acute-care private not‑for‑profit and the largest private hospital in New South Wales, had deployed VMware Horizon View to support its EMR but rapidly expanded VDI to deliver a richer desktop experience. A new 12‑story clinical building pushed concurrent VDI users from about 40 to over 200 (a >400% increase), which bloated the gold image, slowed logons from under 20 seconds to two–four minutes, caused profile corruption, and created printer- and GPO‑management headaches.

SAH implemented AppSense (Environment Manager and Performance Manager) after a two‑week proof‑of‑concept. AppSense reduced initial logons to 15–25 seconds, eliminated profile corruption, cut GPOs from 60+ to three, simplified location‑based printing (mapping users to 3–4 nearby printers instead of 50–100), lowered VDI load, and enabled the hospital to manage 400% VDI growth without adding support staff—improving clinician experience and freeing IT to focus on patient‑care enhancements.
